1. Introduction Political philosophers have tried to construct a possible relationship between friendship obligations and political obligations. They argue that in addition to sharing certain other features, both species of obligations arise from relationships which have intrinsic value for persons. The intrinsic value of these relationships gives rise to certain obligations that are specific to the relationships. They are therefore not obligations that are owed to persons outside the relationship. They are special and not general obligations.
